Pay Contributions

Note:All registered residents of Japan between age 20 and 59 must be covered by National Pension system. The insured persons under NationalPension system are categorized to three types.

Category Ⅰ Insured Persons

All residents of Japan between age 20 and 59 who are not Category Ⅱ or Ⅲ insured persons (e.g. self-employed persons, students, agricultural, forestry and fishery workers, unemployed persons)

When you become subject to Category Ⅰ insured person, you must pay contributions by yourself every month.

You may be exempted from contribution payments if the previous year's income of you, your spouse, or/and head of your household is less than certain amount, and if your application for exemption is granted.

Category Ⅱ Insured Persons

Private/public sector workers under age 70 who are covered by Employees’ Pension Insurance (except for persons aged 65 and older who are eligible for old-age pension)

If you are a Category Ⅱ insured person, your contribution amounts are calculated by applying the same contribution rate to your Standard Monthly Remuneration (In principle, average monthly salary for April, May, and July) and your Standard Bonus Amount; the amounts of contributions are evenly shared by you (employee) and the employer.

Category Ⅲ Insured Persons

Category Ⅱ incurred persons’ economically dependent spouses between age 20 and 59, residing in Japan (excluding spouses of Category Ⅱ insured persons who reached age 65 and eligible for Old-age Basic Pension)
If you are Category Ⅲ insured person, you don't have to pay contributions because whole Category Ⅱ insured persons bear the contributions for Category Ⅲ insured persons.
