• Totalization of coverage periods: To enable you to totalize your periods of both Japan and the other country to fill the gap for benefits under the system of the agreement country so that you may qualify for benefits.

Public pension system is designed based on the idea of all working people supporting the livelihoods of those in need, including people in old age, people with disability due to illness or injury, and surviving family members whose primary wage earner died.
Public pension system consists of a two-tier structure as follows;

• National Pension: cover all residents of Japan between age 20 and 59

Basic Pension Number is a number to manage pension coverage record of each insured person. In principle, each person is assigned one Basic Pension Number, which never changes.
When you enroll in Japanese public pension for the first, JPS sends you Basic Pension Number Notice to inform you of your Number, registered name and date of birth.
Keep the Notice in a safe place. If you lose it, JPS branch office reissue it to you.
