Enroll in Pension System
All residents of Japan between age 20 and 59, regardless of nationality, must be covered by National Pension by law. There are three types of insured persons of National Pension according to their status as follows:
Category Ⅱ insured persons (company workers and public sector workers)
Category Ⅲ insured persons (economically-dependent spouses of category Ⅱ insured persons)
Category Ⅰ Insured Persons
All residents of Japan between age 20 and 59 who are not Category Ⅱ or Ⅲ insured persons (e.g. self-employed persons, students, agricultural, forestry and fishery workers, unemployed persons.)
When you become subject to Category Ⅰ insured person, you need to submit, by yourself, application to enroll in as Category I insured person to the municipal office of your place of residence within 14 days.
Enrollment in National Pension
Note:Foreign nationals with specific visa (i.e. medical stay/long stay for sightseeing) are not subject to coverage of National Pension as Category Ⅰ insured persons.
Category Ⅱ Insured Persons
Company workers and public sector workers under 70 who are covered in Employees’ Pension Insurance (except for persons age 65 or older who are eligible for old-age pension.)
When you become subject to the Category Ⅱ insured person, your employer needs to submit “Application to Enroll in EPI / EHI.”

Notes:
- You must be covered as Category Ⅰ insured person for the period from your entry to Japan until you become Category Ⅱ insured person.
- Mariners shall be covered by Seamen’s Insurance system.
Enrollment in Seamen's Insurance
Category Ⅲ Insured Persons
Category Ⅱ insured persons’ economically-dependent spouses between age 20 and 59, residing in Japan (excluding spouse of Category Ⅱ insured person who reached age 65 and eligible for Old-age Basic Pension.)
When you become subject to the Category Ⅲ insured person, employer of your spouse needs to submit “National Pension: Application to Enroll in as Category Ⅲ Insured Person.”
