The pension benefits are paid up to the month of the pensioner's death. When a pensioner dies, his/her survivor can claim unpaid pension benefits the deceased person didn’t receive.

How to Claim

When a pensioner dies, his/her survivor can claim unpaid pension for the deceased person, by submitting "Claim for the Unpaid Pension / Insurance Benefits" together with "Report on Pensioner’s Death.“
The eligible survivors are the deceased person’s spouse, child(ren), parent(s), grandchild(ren), and grandparent(s), or sibling (sister or brother) and other immediate family member(s) within first, second and third level* who was/were living in the same household and sharing the living at the time of death of the person who had been receiving pension benefits. Priority is given to claimants in the same order.

* Other immediate family member(s) within first, second and third level

First level: Spouse of children or parents of spouse

Second level: Spouse of grandchildren, spouse of siblings, siblings of spouse, or grandparents of spouse

Third level: Great-grandchildren, great-grandparents, spouse of great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, spouse of nephews/nieces, spouse of aunts/uncles, great-grandparents of spouse, nephews/nieces of spouse, or aunts/uncles of spouse

Documents to be attached are as follows;

  • Deceased pensioner’s Pension Certificate
  • Document to prove relationship between the deceased person and survivor, e.g. certified copy of Family Registry*
  • Document to prove that the deceased person and the survivor lived in the same household*
  • Copy of statements, passbook, or account certificate of survivor’s bank to receive the unpaid pension benefits**
  • If the deceased person and the survivor lived separately, provide "Declaration of livelihood sharing and relationship."

* Date of document must be after the date of death.

** If you reside outside Japan and wish to receive your pension at an overseas banks, you also need to submit “Notification of Registration (Change) of Address/Pension-receiving Financial Institution of Pension Recipient Residing Outside Japan.”

If you live in Japan, submit the Claim at your nearest JPS branch office or pension consultation center.
If you live outside of Japan, send it by post to JPS Headquarters or JPS branch office in charge of your latest place of residence in Japan.
