Widow's Pension

If your husband dies after contributing for at least 10 years as the Category Ⅰ insured person and if he has received neither Old-age Basic Pension nor Disability Basic Pension as of the previous day of his death, you can receive Widow’s Pension while you are between age 60 and 64. To qualify, you need to have been married to him for at least 10 years and have been financially supported by him at the time of his death.
Benefits Amount
Equivalent to your late husband's unpaid Old-age Basic Pension (based only on the Category Ⅰ insured periods as of the previous day of his death) x 3/4
How to apply
You need to file "Application for Pension: Widow's Pension under National Pension."
Documents to be attached are as follows;
- Documents to prove relationship between the deceased person and the applicant, e.g. certified copy of Family Registry*
- Documents to prove that the deceased person and the applicant lived in the same household*
- Proof of the applicant’s income*
- Copy of statements, passbook, or certificate of your bank account, as evidence of your bank account for benefits deposit**
- “Declaration of livelihood sharing and relationship,” if the deceased person and the claimant lived separately
* Date of documents must be after the date of death.
** If you reside outside Japan and wish to have your benefits deposited to your bank account outside Japan, you also need to submit “Notification of Registration (Change) of Address/Pension-receiving Financial Institution of Pension Recipient Residing Outside Japan.”
If you reside in Japan, submit the application and documents to your nearest JPS branch office or pension consultation center. If you reside outside Japan, send it by post to the JPS branch office in charge of your latest place of residence in Japan or to the JPS Headquarters. See list of JPS branch offices.
